Six apartments, built to modern standards and finished Caribbean
The house stands beside a village the Dutch called Beter Verwagting — better expectation. It is an unreasonable name to live next to, and the house has spent its whole life trying to deserve it.
Six apartments, built to modern standards, finished in a Caribbean register — full of colour, and alive. Rooms with space in them rather than rooms with a bed in them. That distinction is most of what Terry Slowe carried over from years of walking other people through other people’s houses.
What follows from it is unglamorous and it is the whole point: breakfast cooked to your requirements instead of held under a lamp, a gate that is guarded at four in the morning, and a generator that takes over before anyone upstairs notices the grid has gone.
